This is a quote I saw from the desktop wallpaper of my mentor, who is also my favourite lecturer from IMU, Dr Srikumar. He's a very interesting lecturer, as his lectures are always easy to understand and you will not fall asleep in the class. One thing he always do is that he would insert interesting videos that doesn't relate to the subject he's teaching in the middle of the lecture to "wake" people up. To be honest, for a few times I was refreshed because of these videos.
Also, you can see from the way he explains things and the way he arranged all his notes, that he tries to makes things easier for us to understand and therefore, this is why he's always thinking of the students. Does this make him a great lecturer? Yes. But is it come from "being strong"? Erm... Maybe it's one of the factors, but definitely not the whole package.
I believe that just being strong will not help us in becoming a great person, as everyone has their own limits. If being strong is the only way you behave, you will definitely fall one day as you have no other strength when you reach your limit. It's just like a string that's too tight, yes it might be strong, but if you keep pulling it, it will break eventually.
On the other hand, when you have different strengths, you will be able to face and cope with different kind of situations, be it good or bad, successful or failure, with the right attitude to cope with all these, you don't even need to look strong.
Also one thing I realised is that when a person "shows" that he/she is strong, he/she is normally very fragile inside. The strong face that one puts up is merely a mask to protect oneself. If one is strong mentally, the person doesn't even need to show that he/she's strong as he/she is not afraid of anything comes to him/her, therefore there's no need to say that "hey I am strong, don't you dare to challenge me".
One of the factors of being great is to be able to accept failure, and apart from being strong, you need to face the reality, then only you can think of ways to overcoming the failure, or to try again. If one is being strong and optimistic blindly, the cruel truth will eventually destroy the person's confidence. As many have said, there's only a fine line in between being egoistic and having low self esteem.
Yes, one can be addicted to "be" strong. It's a mask that protects yourself, and keeping yourself from emotionally affected by things around you. However, the ability to try, to love, or even to do something that you dream of requires you to come out of your comfort zone. When you are required to do so, it is impossible for you to put on a strong face and act like nothing is going to beat you, because the truth is, things are always not easy.
Don't be strong, use your strength in the right place is good enough. Cry when you are sad, talk to people when you need to, focus when you are working, relax when you are resting, smile when you are enjoying, laugh when you are happy, that's living your life to the fullest.
